The very first image

It all started when...

The mysterious part of the eye hiding behind the iris was revealed to me for the first time as a pediatric ophthalmology fellow. From the moment I saw the UBM image, my perception of congenital cataracts and glaucoma would be forever changed. I was awestruck that a Soemmering's ring could reshape the entire iris and anterior chamber. I was utterly confused by the complex anatomy of the ciliary body, which was previously only visible as a thin and simple band on gonioscopy.

This revelation, based upon a single image (shown above), inspired me to uncover more about the anatomy of the anterior segment, in particular the hidden anatomy behind the iris, with the long term goal of improving patient outcomes.
